Our Story The Academy of Athens is the foremost intellectual institution of Greece, established in 1926 and celebrating its centenary in 2026. Housed in an emblematic building on Panepistimiou Street in central Athens, it serves as the national academy of sciences and humanities. Its core mission is to cultivate and disseminate scientific knowledge, literature, and the arts through research, publications, and public discourse. The Academy organizes its work through a body of regular and honorary members, specialized research centers, scientific committees—such as the Energy Committee—and foundations including the Foundation of Biomedical Research and the Kostas and Eleni Ouranis Foundation. It maintains a central library, a bookshop, and a digital academy, and has published more than 700 titles spanning the humanities and the positive sciences, including proceedings, treatises, and research studies.
