Our Story Designskolen Aalborg is a specialized design and sewing school operated under FOKUS Folkeoplysning, a non-profit folk-education association in Aalborg Municipality, Denmark. Founded and led since 2008 by Hanne Ebdrup — a trained handwork teacher from Skals Håndarbejdsseminarium — the school offers an intensive semester-based environment for adults exploring clothing design, pattern cutting, and garment construction. Since 2013, model constructor Dorte Ørsnæs Jensen has co-taught, bringing professional pattern-making expertise. The school functions as a practical stepping stone to higher fashion and textile education; every former student who subsequently applied to advanced design programs has been accepted. Alumni have gone on to roles as Head of Design, launched independent brands such as Halunk, and exhibited cross-disciplinary art and design projects. Programs & Trainings 🎓 Intensive Semester — Design and Sew Your Own Clothes: a 14-week immersive program running twice yearly (28 sessions, Tuesday & Wednesday, 9:00–14:00), covering the full arc from idea to finished garment. 🎓 Basic Pattern Construction — sloper development for skirts, trousers, dresses, and jackets, providing the foundational blocks used in custom garment creation. 🎓 Pattern Development & Model Adaptation — instruction in modifying base patterns to realize personal designs and achieve correct fit. 🎓 Fashion Drawing & Design Illustration — lessons in drawing original models and visualizing design concepts on paper. 🎓 Practical Sewing & Garment Assembly — hands-on construction of personally designed clothing, consolidating sewing techniques and finishing skills. 🎓 Thematic Workshops (Temafag) — monthly specialized sessions held on the first Tuesday and Wednesday of each month; topics include textile printing, bags and purses, sewing with fur and leather remnants, and patchwork, selected by participants during the first session. 🎓 Higher Education Preparation — portfolio and skill-building track aimed at admission to bachelor-level design programs (e.g., Teko, VIA Design, Kunstakademiet). 🎓 Rolling Enrollment Option — participants may start mid-season subject to availability, with fees prorated to the remaining weeks. 🎓 Young & Strong / Student Pathway — reduced-rate access for adults aged 18–25 and students residing in Aalborg Kommune, supported by the municipal Projekt Young and Strong subsidy. 🎓 Subsidized Rate Pathways — reduced pricing for unemployed, state pensioners, early retirees, and sickness benefit recipients living in Aalborg Kommune. The pedagogical model follows Danish folk-education principles, emphasizing participant influence, experimentation, and the journey from initial idea to completed project. Teachers provide structured schemata so students always know the day’s focus, yet retain freedom to explore creative directions and unconventional ideas. Who It's For The school is open to all adults, regardless of municipality or prior experience. It suits complete beginners, self-taught sewers seeking systematic technical foundations, hobbyists wishing to build a personal wardrobe, and aspiring professional designers preparing for higher education. Specific subsidized tracks exist for Aalborg Kommune residents who are unemployed, on sickness or disability benefits, receiving state pensions, or aged 18–25 / enrolled in higher education. The program has successfully supported career-changers and young creatives entering the fashion industry. Facilities & Practical Info Classes take place in-person at FOKUS, Thistedvej 58, 9400 Nørresundby. The semester schedule runs Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:00 to 14:00, totaling 12 weekly lessons. Participants receive a printed course schedule mapping out each day’s activities. The upcoming autumn 2026 semester runs from 1 September to 9 December with a break in week 42. Payment can be split into four installments; registration becomes binding upon the first installment. Instruction is conducted in Danish.
